Mars Trek by NASA is not just a map of Mars — it's a full cartographic tool built from real mission data: global terrain, orbital imagery, landing sites. And crucially, you don't just look here — you measure. Here's a ten-minute route that makes the scale of Mars physical.
Step one: measure the largest volcano in the Solar System
Search for Olympus Mons. In the tools menu, pick "Calculate Elevation Profile" and draw a line across the summit. The chart builds in seconds: 21 kilometers above the surrounding plains. That's two and a half Everests stacked on top of each other. The volcano's base is about 600 kilometers across — it would cover an entire country. Yet the slopes are so gentle that, standing on them, you'd never guess you were walking up the biggest mountain in the Solar System.
Step two: a canyon that would span Europe
Now fly to Valles Marineris. Draw a profile across the canyon: up to 7 kilometers deep. Then take the "Calculate Distance" tool and measure it lengthwise — about 4,000 kilometers. Laid over a map of Europe, this canyon would stretch from the Atlantic to Ukraine. The Grand Canyon would be a scratch on this profile.
Step three: see where Perseverance is
Find Jezero Crater. Zoom in and you'll spot a fan-shaped structure: the delta of an ancient river that fed a crater lake billions of years ago. This delta is why the Perseverance rover was landed here — it's collecting samples for a future return to Earth. Turn on the high-resolution imagery layers and trace the channels where water once flowed.
Step four: print yourself a piece of Mars
If you have access to a 3D printer, this is not a joke. The "Generate 3D Print File" tool exports any patch of terrain as a printable file: outline Olympus Mons or a stretch of the canyon and get a model you can hold in your hands. There's also a Trek VR mode and a sun-angle calculator — the same kind used in mission planning.
